Currently, I am living and teaching in the Raleigh area of North Carolina. This is my first year being a part of this amazing school, Brentwood Magnet Elementary School of Engineering. Brentwood is one of four Renaissance schools in Wake County, and is also a Magnet School of Distinction for our engineering framework. Six years ago, Brentwood was one of just three STEM schools in the state, and has risen to be a model for others to aspire to. My role within the Brentwood team is the Instructional Technology Facilitator for all grades, and the STEM Instructor for Kindergarten and First Grade. This has allowed me to be a part of all grade levels and reach all the students! I am working in my dream job!
For the past two years, I taught fourth grade in Rocky Mount at M.B. Hubbard Elementary. My Hubbard family taught me so much as I worked through my first years of teaching. In my second year, I was able to be the only self-contained classroom above second grade. Teaching all subjects to my 19 students, really changed the way in which I view education. On a daily basis we used our 1:1 iPads for integrated learning throughout the curriculum. We participated in countless learning opportunities, and really made an impact on our school! My students were able to compete in the stock market game, initiate a school wide recycling program, created Fluency Friends, 8 students were published in a national poetry contest, Read Across America, and so much more. As a result of our active year, I was chosen as Teacher of the Year for M.B. Hubbard.
While working full time, I began my Masters of Arts in Educational Technology through Michigan State University and will be graduating in the Fall of 2013, currently my GPA is a 4.0 for my Masters. During my Undergraduate career, I began at Miami University of Ohio, and completed my freshman year there with a GPA of 3.9. I became a Spartan and after three years, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with double teaching majors of English Language Arts and Social Studies, and a minor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). As a Spartan, I was an active participant as the President of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (a Platinum chapter), Historian for Tomorrows Educators Advocating for Multiculturalism, member of Student Michigan Education Association, member of Student Council for Exceptional Children, and committee member of Kappa Delta Pi (an educators fraternity).
Born and raised in the great mitten state, I grew up in the Kalamazoo area. Attending Gull Lake High School was a privilege. While in high school I was able to participate as the captain of Women's Golf, JV soccer, Freshman volleyball, and President of the Spanish Honor Society and Spanish Club, Volunteens Secretary, Student Council representative, Model UN, QuizBowl, and more.
I have always loved being active! The youngest in a family of six, we were always busy and on the go. This pushed me to be involved in a variety of activities from a very young age. Sports, hiking, camps, skiing (water and snow), arts and crafts, music (cello, piano, and flute), reading and traveling. As an adult, my interests have really grown in photography, travel, and scuba diving. Travel has played a huge role in my life. Growing up, my family managed to visit all but two of the contiguous United States. After that, I traveled to Canada, Mexico, England, France, Spain, Costa Rica, and most recently Australia. I am extremely outgoing and love new adventures!
